Brief History
Hello, my name is Ruston Ueckert, owner of Flush It Portable Toilets. I’d like to share how I got started in the portable toilet industry. It all began in 2020 when I was working construction at a local industrial plant as an ironworker/welder for a metal building company. The plant had a strict mask policy, requiring masks unless you were alone in a truck. Like many of my coworkers, I didn’t enjoy wearing a mask, so I started thinking of jobs where I could spend most of my time in a truck.
One day, a coworker suggested cleaning port-a-potties. The ones at our plant desperately needed it, which piqued my interest. At the time, I also worked for homebuilders, constructing shops and other projects on the side. The portable toilets at those job sites were in equally poor condition—less than desirable, to say the least. I shared my idea with a few contractors, and they thought it was fantastic. They all told me the same thing: with regular service, portable toilets don’t have to be that bad.
That advice fueled my interest, so I started researching the portable toilet industry, learning from professionals nationwide, and studying the chemicals used for cleaning and maintenance. I contacted the health department to understand licensing requirements. When I shared my plan with my wife, she thought I was joking—until I went and took the licensing test. After passing, I came home and announced I was buying used units. She didn’t fully believe me until I told her I was heading to Iowa to pick up toilets.
I built a custom trailer and vacuum tank from an old propane tank, and by August 2022, Flush It Portable Toilets was up and running. I wanted to share this story because not long ago, I was just another construction worker dealing with subpar portable toilets. Now, I’m committed to providing clean, well-maintained units for construction sites, events, and more.
